Girl's Arise Club
The Girl’s Arise Club was founded by a young visionary named Linessie K. Phiri who noticed that girls attending Kawalazi Primary School in Nkhata-Bay district were facing numerous obstacles that often resulted in their absence from class or dropping out of school entirely. Determined to provide a safe space for these girls, Linessie established the Girls Arise club, where they could discuss important issues and gain valuable skills to overcome their challenges. The club has since become a source of hope for these girls, empowering them to take charge of their education and futures.
Nkhata Bay district has been struggling with high rates of school dropout among girls, primarily due to teenage pregnancies. The lack of allocation towards youth programs in the current District Development Plan (DDP) for the period 2017-2022 has further exacerbated the situation, resulting in limited access to sexual and reproductive health services for girls both in and outside of school.
HOW WILL YOUR SPONSORSHIP HELP THE GIRLS ARISE CLUB?
Girls Arise has been implementing interventions to support adolescent girls in schools. With the provision of menstrual hygiene kits, the girls will no longer miss classes during their periods, which has been a common occurrence due to the inability of their parents to afford pads. Moreover, the kits will promote healthy menstrual hygiene practices, ensuring that the girls have a safe and hygienic place to store the pads and are able to change them as needed, which has not been possible in the area before. The sponsorship will significantly contribute to addressing these issues and improving the educational outcomes for girls in Nkhata Bay district.
