10+ Her Period Her Pride

Nearly 200 million menstruating girls and women in low- and middle-income countries, including Malawi, struggle every day to access Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) products, particularly those from low-income households. Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Lilongwe rural areas, such as Nathenje, Dzenza, Chitipi, Mitundu, Chipala, Chituwa, Shire, Mwenda, and Mzumazi, face similar challenges every month.

Peter's motivation for starting the 10+ Her Period Her Pride initiative came from witnessing girls missing classes during their menstrual periods while on assignment with Corps Africa in Kasungu. He started this initiative to mobilize more men and boys to be involved in menstrual hygiene issues since menstruation is still considered a taboo in Malawi.

Through this initiative, Peter and a group of young leaders have trained 1000 women and girls to make reusable sanitary pads using local materials, provided MHM knowledge to primary and secondary school girls, and ensured inclusivity by including girls and women with disabilities in their activities.

While the initiative is commendable, the quality of materials used and sewing skills compromise the quality and effectiveness of the reusable pads to control menstrual flow and protect girls from staining. Cloth pads should be sewn with machines and quality material to ensure they are durable enough to last for 18+ months and can control the flow of menstrual blood throughout the night and during physical activity.

HOW WILL YOUR SPONSORSHIP HELP 10+ HER PERIOD HER PRIDE?

Peter is requesting 300 SWD kits from The Grace Pads Store to distribute to catchment primary and secondary schools. The effectiveness of the SWD will boost the confidence of the girls who lack access to quality sanitary pads.
